How To Avoid Ministry Burnout

“And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. And they departed into a desert place by ship privately” (Mark 6:30-32).

There are some principles in this passage that full-time ministries can apply that can protect from ministry burn out:

1. Remain Christ-Centered. The key to ministry vitality is spiritual intimacy. When are close to Christ we stay close to His Passion.

2. Rehearse Spiritual Successes – We often burnout because we don’t take the time to testify of the triumphs. Good things are happening through you. Verbalize the victories of the ministry.

3. Relax Regular Routines – Whatever you normally and daily do take a break from it. It’s okay. Jesus said you could.

4. Recognize People Pressure – People are always coming and going in ministry. Don’t take it personal. People are for a season and a reason.

5. Replenish Natural Needs – Sleep well, eat your favorite foods and enjoy some private time doing whatever makes you feel full and fulfilled.

The Strategy of a Sabbatical

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light “ (Matthew 11:28-30).

On the seventh day of the seventh month I am officially beginning my first full thirty (30) day sabbatical. This is a time for me to rest my body, relax my soul and renew my spirit. My time will be spent quietly in The Word and prayer joyfully with our family and thoughtfully with a few real good books.

My greatest appreciation goes to the members of The House of Prayer Everywhere who make these moments possible and enjoyable. As your senior pastor and visionary I take this sabbatical with the intention of returning as a better servant and shepherd. Thank you for investing in my recharge and reboot!

The “sabbatical” is a state of imposed rest. It is when one schedules and disciplines themselves to take a time of rest from normal and vocational responsibilities. For most highly imperative personalities it is hard work to find rest. Listen to Jesus! He will put your resistance to rest to bed.

I too am one of those imperative personalities. I think in terms of what I “must” do versus what I can do, I live a high intensity lifestyle. I am impassioned and committed to impact. The anointing of the ministry attracts movers and shakers, entrepreneurs, engineers  and educators.

We all need a sabbath for the “soul”. We All need to take some time off to renew our minds, wills and emotions. Let The House rest.  The seventh (7th) is the sabbatical number.

On the seventh day God rested (Genesis 2:1-2). Each year The House sets aside July as a month of intentional rest and relaxation from the rigorous responsibilities of full time ministry.

The wisdom of a sabbatical is encouraged in the words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28-30.  Jesus spoke these words to people who were exhausted by the routines and rituals of Temple religion. They were spent. They were at their liturgical and levitical ends. They needed rest from trying to gain God’s approval through works and The Law. He seems to outline for them and now Us how to take a spiritual sabbatical that changes your life.

Sabbaticals should be times of:

  1. Unloading “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take the time to rest from whatever is the “labour” and whatever is the “heavy burden”. Acknowledge your limitations and don’t be lulled or bullied into being everyone’s hero and everyone’s resource. Rest from having to be the answer for all. Consider yourself and care for yourself and don’t apologize for it.
  1. Uploading –Take my yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls”. This is the time to focus on Jesus, who He is, what He wants and what wills for your life. Rest in knowing that “the yoke” (that is easy and the burden that is light) always carries you forward into your faith and further into His favour. Take this time to learn of Him. Get in His lap and listen to His heartbeat. Learn the rhythm of your Father’s heart. Draw closer to God and watch God draw closer to you. It is an unbreakable spiritual law (James 4:7-9).

“Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. And they departed into a desert place by ship privately (Mark 6:30-32).

The 39 Stripes

“The thirty-nine stripes that Jesus bore for our redemption, healing and deliverance came from a Roman flagellum. Allow me to explain. The Roman flagellum would have been the instrument used to beat Jesus. This whip was made of three belts or ropes of leather attached to a wooden handle. When the scourging began the administer would be a rough and rugged seasoned Roman soldier.

Jesus was beat that we might be healed. He bore the stripes on his back that we might not have to carry the burden of sickness and disease. Our healing and deliverance was secured by the stripes on his body.” – The 39 Stripes by Bishop Sean Teal.

You Are….

You are highly valued! You are adopted by God! You are an offspring of The Almighty! You are forever loved by God! You are more than a conqueror! You have divine DNA! You are chosen! You are elected! You are accepted! You are redeemed! You are justified! You are washed! You are sanctified! You are anointed! You are ordained! You are destined! You are purposed! You are divine! You are good seed! You are good soil! You are a solution! You are an answer! You are a blessing! You are blessed! You are prosperous! You have good success! You are a wealthy place! You are overflowing with milk and honey! You are a vessel ready to be used by the Master! You are the prized possession of God! You are a trophy of grace that the Father has put on display before all of creation!

The Cost of Our Pentecost

We were young fresh up starts. Pentecost was all new to us. We were in a season of traumatic transition. There was a whirlwind of wonder happening all around us. We were being blown away. The Holy Spirit had overtaken and overwhelmed us.

Stephanie and I were living in the beleaguered married dorms of American Baptist College when she was gloriously baptized into the Holy Spirit. In an old time Pentecostal “prayer band” in the back of a beauty salon a girl raised as a Catholic, saved as a Baptist has now received power from on high. I am a witness of the workings of the Holy Spirit. I attest, as God is my witness, the Holy Spirit still fills as He did on the Day of Pentecost.

Two weeks later I too was immersed into the power of God. The Spirit of God had us. We were living and learning the Holy Spirit. Everyday was an adventure in the anointing. We were being driven. We only knew whatever the Holy Spirit taught us. We read the Book of Acts with fresh eyes. We believed every word.

We believed that we were called to continue what we were reading in The Book of Acts. What we experienced was in The Bible. Spiritual phenomenon is real. Pentecost is not in the past. The Holy Spirit still falls. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit is still happening. It happened to us. It can happen to you!

We left Nashville, Tennessee on the Greyhound Bus headed to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. We had our clothes and my books. The Holy Spirit spoke to us and then sent us. When we arrived at the Baton Rouge bus terminal we bought and shared one order of red beans and rice. It was not a gesture of young love; it was us conserving our funds for an unknown future. That’s the kind of faith walk we were on.

I would continue my education on a campus that was sponsored by and centered in one of the most classical Pentecostal ministries of the 20th century. I can still remember kneeling at the altar in that empty 7,000 seat sanctuary with the sounds of vacuum cleaners going over the ever kempt crimson carpet. My sobs were submerged under their sounds and with hot tears streaming down my face I was asking The Father, “Why are You doing this to us? What are we doing here?”

Our whole world was foreign territory. This was a mega ministry in every sense of the term. The machinery of the ministry was vast and voluminous. The intensity of the ministry could be felt in everything. The rapidity of the ministry required a flexibility and elasticity that stretched our capacity daily. The Spirit was moving. We were being moved. All ministry was “urgent”. We were “keeping up with the Spirit!”

We were not only baptized into The Spirit, we were being baptized into styles and streams of ministry we could not have imagined. We were being introduced to doctrines and dogmas that we never had to discover, decipher or digest. The supernatural was not yet our normal. We were still being shocked and surprised by all the wisdom, works and wonders of The Holy Spirit. We were spiritual neophytes trying to learn how to live in the power of Pentecost.

Within a year of being baptized in the Holy Spirit Stephanie and I launched a nationally syndicated radio ministry that was being featured on 16 stations across America daily. “Grace Alive Radio Network” was being produced weekly in the studios at Jimmy Swaggart Ministries on a “reel to reel”. Stephanie managed and mailed out hundreds of cassette tapes from a linen closet out a student apartment.

We were filled with The Spirit and full of faith. We were “water walkers”. Whatever we did, it didn’t make sense. It made faith! We were living in a student apartment and writing checks for over $3,000 a month to cover radio time and production. We believed God was calling us to world evangelism. I was “Evangelist Sean Teal”. Our ministry was being fully funded by honorariums, the freewill offerings of listeners and those blessed cassette tape sermons.

The day when things broke for us was the day when I pulled up to the daycare center on the campus. Stephanie worked there. I was driving a friend’s car. We did not yet own our own. Stephanie got into the car, looked at me on that Friday afternoon and said, “We don’t have any money. We need $10 so I can feed us through the weekend. You have to preach on Sunday. After you preach on Sunday we’re going to have to cash that check!”

The reason I borrowed my friend’s car was because we needed to go by the post office to check the ministry’s post office box. Our weekends had become the time we fulfilled orders and tried to handle any necessary business before close on Fridays. On the ride to the post office I am rehearsing what Stephanie told me. “We don’t have any money”. I am now beginning my negotiations with God.

We cut a covenant with Father God that all funds that came in for the radio ministry would go directly and solely to the radio ministry. We wouldn’t and we hadn’t received any salary or stipends from the offerings or product sales. Many times we were sowing my preaching honorariums to help cover ministry costs.

But in that car with the care of my newly minted wife so close to my mind, I prepared God for what I was about to do. I was going to the post office box and retrieve the mail for the ministry. I was going to “borrow” from the ministry any money that came through the mail to get us through the weekend. I would give it back after I got through this “tight”.

We arrived. I went in. I opened the box. There was one envelope in the box. I was stunned in disbelief. We never received just one piece of mail. I took it out. Slowly and sullenly I shrunk my way back to the car. I got in the car and tossed the envelope over to the passenger’s side where it landed in Stephanie’s lap. She looked up at me and didn’t have to ask.

Before I could put on my seatbelt she reached over and touched my forearm as if to ask me to wait a second before we pulled off. I complied to the intention of the touch. She then opened the envelope.

She unfolded the letter and within was a ten dollar bill. She set the ten dollars on her lap and then began to read the letter. “Dear Evangelist Teal, I heard your message today on our Christian radio station. I was so blessed by the Word. This offering is not for the radio ministry. I’m sending this gift for you and your wife. I hope you are encouraged. Please continue to broadcast your messages”.

This letter and offering came from a sweet, dear and saintly White lady who lived nearly 100 miles north of Omaha, Nebraska. She had to have mailed it by Tuesday for us to receive it by Friday. We didn’t even know I was being heard in that region of the nation. The station she heard us on was not even one of our paid stations. The LORD was moving upon that dear saintly sister in time for our need to be met. He knew our need before we knew we would have the need.

I wiped the tears from my eyes as Stephanie finished reading the letter. I was rebuked and rewarded. Stephanie then pushes me on the shoulder, smiles and says, “Why didn’t I say we needed $100?!” We both broke out into a raucous laugh. We praised God! We ate good – neckbones and red beans.  It all ended in joy!

From that day on, we have never wondered or worried. God will stir people you don’t know and bring you blessings you never expected. Putting God first is how we prosper. Order is God’s strategy for increase!

This Pentecost Sunday 2021 that same couple that shared a bowl of red beans and rice at a Greyhound bus station will sow a $500 seed to The House of Prayer Everywhere. We are blessed to finance and further The Gospel and Prayer around the world. We are still that same couple committed to giving whatever we have and whatever it takes to fulfill God’s purpose. Our passion for world evangelism and global prayer burns now with a greater blaze than ever before!

Say “Yes!” to Pentecost. Join our house and The House! Sow your “Super Seed”. May this be the significant and supernatural seed that breaks you through into a new season of outpouring and overflowing!

“….And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all, that there were no needy persons among them (Acts 4:33-34)

The Harvest Is Here!

Sunday, May 16th – Tuesday, May 18th

Prepare For Pentecost

Shavuot commemorates the time when the first fruits were harvested and brought to the Temple, and is known as Hag ha-Bikkurim (Hebrew), (The Festival of The First Fruits).

For Orthodox Jews Shavuot celebrates the giving of the Torah. The Law of Moses (The Ten Commandments) was given at Mount Sinai. It is known in Hebrew as Hag Matan Torateinu (“The Festival of the Giving of Our Torah”).

The time from Passover to Shavuot is a time of great anticipation. The time from The Cross to Pentecost are 50 days of hope and expectation. We count each of the 50 days that leads to Pentecost Sunday.

From Passover to the day before Shavuot there are 49 days or 7 full weeks, hence the name of the festival is The Feast of Weeks. Old Testament Shavuot is New Testament Pentecost. In the Old Testament God gave His people His Word. In The New Testament God gave His people His Spirit. The Word and The Spirit confirm and create all that God has for us.

Pentecost means “fiftieth”. It happens on the 50th day. The counting reminds us of the important connection between The Cross and Pentecost; Passover and Shavuot. The Passover is salvation. The Passover is God keeping His Word. The Cross is salvation. It is God keeping His Word.

The Shavuot is expansion. After salvation expect expansion. Shavuot is God keeping His Word. Pentecost is an expansion. Pentecost Day is God keeping His Word to His Church.

Shavuot is not tied to a particular calendar date, but to the counting from Passover. The season begins at the time of the lamb being slain and offered as a sacrifice. Passover is the protocol of all festivals. The Cross is God’s protocol. The Cross is how God chose to make all that He is and  all that He has available to humans.

Shavuot is spiritual and biblical. We should rest from our flesh. The Holy Spirit is our power source. Shavuot nights (May 16th-18th) are times for us to study the Word. I encourage you to read The Book of Ruth each night. The Holy Spirit is prominent in The Book of Ruth. Prepare to rise early in the morning (5am / Tuesdays and Thursdays).

Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest (Leviticus 23;10).

I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,) (I Corinthians 18:15).

Mothers Have Favor

“Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God” (Luke 1:30).

Mary must be the most celebrated mother in history. No mother has had as much riding on her motherhood as Mary. No mother has ever carried in their womb “God come in the flesh”. No mother, but Mary was ever given the charge to raise a Savior. The motherhood of Mary is the most important model for mothers who want to birth and raise children that belong to God.

Motherhood according to the Mary narrative is all about the purpose of God in the earth. Motherhood is for divine design. Motherhood is a feminine gift. Motherhood is meant  to influence the direction of the next generation. Motherhood is a calling from God.

Mothers have favor. This is the first grace God gave to Mary. “Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women” (Luke 1:28). Mary’s motherhood began with the favor of God. Favor is the grace of God that supplies and sustains our successes.

Everything Mary was going to need to be a mother was hers before she ever held baby Jesus. The angel ministered the encouragement and the equipment she needed to conceive, give birth and shape the early years of Jesus. She was “favored” and “blessed”! That’s all it takes to do what God has called you to do. That’s all it takes for you to be who God wants you to be.

Whatever anxieties and insecurities that motherhood can pose, a messenger from God with a word from God took away the fear. Favor conquers fear. Fear is for people who do not have a word from God. Mary was graced for the upcoming challenges of motherhood. She had a word from God. You too have a word from God – “Fear not, you have found favor with God!”

Happy Mother’s Day!  May the Lord grant you high favor!
