How To Pray For Your City

The 29/7 Prayer Targets

The Arts (Exodus 35:29-34; Jeremiah 36:4-10; Psalm 150)

Visual Artists, Literary Artists and Performing Artists have a great impact in our culture and our cities. The sculptures our cities see, the books our cities read, the plays our cities will attend, the music our cities hear is shaped by the imagination and inner motivations of the artists. Pray that their skills will be subject to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Pray that images would be inspired by the Spirit. Pray that sacred arts and anointed artists would flourish in and beyond local churches.

Business  (Proverbs 22:7; 22:16; 22:29)

Government, major corporations, small business owners and entrepreneurs drive the economic engines of our culture and cities. Godly business leaders and innovators need wisdom, favor and influence in the markets. Business policies and practices that are systemically unfair and wicked must be confronted by the kingdom of God. Pray that the Lord will raise up a new generation of billionaires and world leaders who confront greed and change how the world treats the poor.

The Church (Isaiah 56:7; I Corinthians 12:28-31; Acts 2:41-47)

The Church in the New Testament is always called and connected to a city center and its vicinities. The Expanding Church was born in a downtown loft in a major city – The Upper Room in Jerusalem. The Church is the work of Jesus continuing in the earth through a body of believers empowered by the Holy Spirit. The primary calling of the church is be “a house of prayer for all people”. Prayer is how the kingdom of God is invited , introduced and initiated in the earth (Matthew 6:10). Pray that pastors receive a passion for prayer and lead churches into prayer.

Education  (Jeremiah 9:23-24; Proverbs 1:5-9; Daniel 1:17-20)

Schools systems, college and university campuses are shaping the thinking and the technology of the next generation. We are in need of an education structure and for more teachers that are equitable, professional and biblical. Pray that the knowledge of God would be the boast of our children. Pray that they would gain wisdom while they get an education. Pray that their acumen and ability to achieve academically be anointed. Declare them, “ten times better!”

The Family  (Genesis 2:21-24, 4:1-2, 5:1-4; Acts 16:31-34; Joshua 24:15)

The foundation of all culture and civilization comes from the family. God’s idea for the family is under attack by the world. The family is God’s strategy for the perpetuity and continuity of humanity. Pray that entire families will be saved and join churches. Pray that families will enter into the ministry and serve God. Pray that the family as God intended it would prosper and be in health (Ephesians 5:22-25; 6:1-4).

Government/Crime  (Romans 13:1-7, 17; I Timothy 2:1-4; Revelation 11:15)

Government is an ordained institution of God. God uses governments to set order and protect society. Government must then be impacted by the kingdom of God if it is to function the way God intended. Pray against the industrial and profiteering prison complex systems in the world.  Pray for police who will truly protect and serve all communities. Pray for the incarcerated and their families. Pray against evil spirits that work in world leaders. Pray for the conscience and inner peace of all in authority. Pray that the kingdom of Christ take over the kingdoms of this world.

Media  (Ephesians 2:1-9; II Corinthians 10:3-5; Revelation 1:7)

Media includes every broadcasting and narrowcasting medium such as internet, social networks, newspapers, magazines, television, radio, billboards, direct mail, cellular tablets and smartphones. These are portals that have incredible access and exposure to everyone everywhere. How we receive information,  how we message and how we entertain ourselves dominates commerce and controls the trends of the culture. Pray that “the prince of the power of the air” be bound away from airwaves. Pray against cyberattacks and internet deceptions. Pray that the media would be God’s tool to reveal Jesus to the world.

Pray For Your City!

It is my joy to pastor in Oakland, California. I pastor in a city that has many things missing for the next generation. It has many things broken in its city systems and governmental structures. It lacks many things that should constitute a quality urban life. It is nonetheless still a joy to be in the purpose of my calling and in the place of my raising.

New Hope is a house of prayer assigned to Oakland. It is from Oakland, out of Oakland, and beyond Oakland that we envision and expect our prayers to touch and transform. We are praying for your city. Would you please pray for ours?

Oakland, California
> Violent crimes per 100,000: 1,977
> Population: 403,887
> 2015 murders: 89 (20th highest)
> Poverty rate: 19.5% (135th highest)
> Percentage of adults with high school degree: 80.9% (62nd lowest)

Oakland has historically suffered from high crime and last year was no exception. Oakland reported nearly 2,000 violent crimes per 100,000 residents in 2015. Moreover, the city reported 1,319 robberies per 100,000 residents, the most of any large American city.

In addition to violent crime, property crime was also quite high in the city, at over 6,200 such incidents per 100,000 residents last year. By comparison, it is  more than double the national rate at 2,731 per 100,000 residents.

Mother Castine Stinson

Proverbs 31:29-30, “Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised”.

Our most sincere condolences to the Thomas family. We indeed weep with you and rejoice with you! The entire Prayer Everywhere Family rises to praise God for the life and ministry of Mother Castine!

She gave so much inspiration and intercession to all of us! Her life, her determination and strength was nothing short of the Spirit of the LORD upon her. She was a miracle every day of her life!

We watched her press on. We witnessed her praise in the midst of pain! We believed with her for the longevity and quality of life that only God’s grace can give. We are blessed to have been exposed to such greatness of character.

Her spiritual motherhood and partnership will still be felt throughout Prayer Everywhere. Her generations are faithful partners of Prayer Everywhere! We truly salute this family, especially Terry and Jackie, for your incredible love and faithfulness. We have witnessed you share your life and prayers  with Mother Castine. Thank you!
